At The Art of Dogs, we're dedicated to providing thoughtful, effective, and proven training programs designed specifically for you and your dog. With years of experience working at various facilities around the country, we've honed our training approach to focus on individualized goal-setting and customized training. This means that every dog and their owner receives a tailored program that addresses their unique needs and goals.
Philosophy
Our philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the human-canine bond and a commitment to understanding canine cognition and behavior. We believe that dogs are not simply pets, but rather companions, and that training should be a collaborative process that strengthens the bond between dog and handler. Our trainers, led by Anneliese Johnson, are certified professionals with extensive experience and a passion for helping dogs become well-rounded members of their families.
Training Services
We currently offer two main training programs: Private Lessons and Board & Train. Our Private Lessons are individualized, one-on-one training sessions with Anneliese, while our Board & Train program is an immersive, in-residence training experience where your dog lives with one of our trainers for a period of weeks or months.
In addition to our main training programs, we also offer group classes and virtual training options for clients who have completed some training with us. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for dogs to socialize and practice their skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Puppy Training
Our puppy training program is designed to lay the foundation for a lifelong bond between you and your dog. We cover essential topics such as socialization, relationship building, environmental exposure, confidence building, potty-training, proper management, and laying a solid foundation for obedience training. Our programs are available in the form of Board & Train as well as Private Lessons.
General Manners
Just because your dog isn't a puppy anymore doesn't mean the training ends there. Our General Manners program covers the basics of obedience, such as sit, down, stay, come when called, go to your bed, proper greetings, and proper leash walking behavior. For those looking for a general obedience and manners program, we offer Private Lessons and Board & Train.
Behavior Modification
Sometimes, our canine companions pick up behaviors that are not pleasant and hard to handle. If your dog is a barker, lunging, or shows unpleasant qualities, we're here to help. Our behavior modification program is a special form of dog training that requires a thorough understanding of canine cognition and training science, as well as experience. We offer our behavior modification programs through Board & Trains and, on a case-by-case basis, Private Lessons.
Sport Dog Training
For those interested in dog sports, such as agility, scent detection, tricks, and competition obedience, we offer coaching and training in these areas. Our trainers have extensive experience in these areas and are passionate about helping dogs and their handlers achieve their goals.

Location & Hours
Our training space is located in Carmel, New York, and is available by appointment only. We're open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and closed on Sundays.
