Sheltering, Caring, and Finding Homes for Animals in Need

The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1887. We are the oldest and largest animal protection organization in New York's Capital Region, serving Albany, Rensselaer, and surrounding counties. Our mission is to transform the lives of animals and people through partnerships, protection, and hope.

Our Story

Founded in 1887, MHHS has a long history of growth and advancement. Our organization was established to provide shelter and care for stray, abused, and unwanted animals. Over the years, we have expanded our services to meet the evolving needs of the community. Today, we offer a variety of programs to support animals and those who care for them.

Our Services

At MHHS, we believe that animals are members of our community and deserve our care and compassion. Our services include:

  • Adoption Center: Our adoption center is home to dozens of animals waiting for a forever home. We have a team of experienced staff and volunteers who work closely with potential adopters to find the perfect match.
  • Pet Food Pantry: Our pet food pantry provides emergency pet food to families in need. We distribute pet food to families who are struggling to care for their pets due to financial constraints.
  • Behavior Helpline: Our behavior helpline provides guidance and support to pet owners who are experiencing behavioral issues with their pets.
  • Dog Training: Our certified dog trainers offer personalized dog training classes to help pet owners strengthen their bond with their pets.
  • Humane Education: We offer humane education programming for children and adults, promoting compassion and kindness towards all living beings.
  • Veterinary Services: Our veterinary services include low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services, vaccination and microchip clinics, and stray housing for municipalities.
  • Cruelty Investigations: Our field services team investigates reports of animal abuse and neglect, and works to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Volunteer Opportunities

At MHHS, we rely heavily on the dedication and hard work of our volunteers. Our volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year to support our programs and services. Whether you are interested in helping with animal care, assisting with events, or providing administrative support, there are many ways to get involved.

Ways to Give

Your support is critical to our ability to provide services to animals in need. There are many ways to make a difference, including:

  • Donations: Every donation, no matter the size, helps us care for the animals in our programs.
  • Volunteering: Join our team of dedicated volunteers and make a difference in the lives of animals.
  • Adopting: Adopting a pet from our shelter not only gives a loving home to a deserving animal, but also opens up space for another animal to be saved.
  • Spay/Neuter: Spaying or neutering your pet can help reduce pet overpopulation and enhance their overall health.

Our Community

At MHHS, we are proud to serve the Albany, Rensselaer, and surrounding communities. Our programs and services touch the lives of over 5,000 animals each year, and we couldn't do it without the support of our community.

Conclusion

At the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, we are dedicated to transforming the lives of animals and people through partnerships, protection, and hope. We rely on the generosity of our donors, the dedication of our volunteers, and the support of our community to continue our life-saving work.
